Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Question: What is the Meeple and Macchiato Board Game Café? Answer: The Meeple and Macchiato is a cozy café-bistro in the heart of Düsseldorf-Bilk – with a special bonus: Over 500 board games are waiting to be discovered.
Question: Do I have to play? Answer: No, that's entirely up to you. You can also just drop by, enjoy a relaxing moment, and sample our drinks and menu – no dice or cards required.
Question: What is a game fee and why does it exist? Answer: Our game fee helps us operate the café sustainably. Unlike traditional cafés, where tables change frequently, our guests usually stay for several hours. This means we can only reserve each table a few times a day. As a profitably managed business with ongoing costs and dedicated employees, we offset this with the game fee – ensuring that Meeple and Macchiato will continue to exist in Düsseldorf in the long term.
Question: Do I need to make a reservation? Answer: A reservation isn't absolutely necessary – but it's worth it, especially on weekends or with a group of people. This way, you can be sure your table will be waiting for you. And if something comes up, simply cancel free of charge, it's hassle-free.
Question: Why is the café now closed on Wednesdays? Answer: When we opened “Meeple und Macchiato,” we never expected such an incredible response – your support has truly touched us. But with all the love comes a lot of work, and we've found ourselves stretched thin behind the scenes. To keep pouring the same care and passion into every pastry, coffee and game night, we've decided to take Wednesdays off. It's a chance to recharge, plan, bake, and keep everything running smoothly – while also taking care of ourselves. At the same time, we’ll continue to use Wednesdays for special events – such as our Open Game Night, which will still take place on the first Wednesday of each month. So every now and then, our day off becomes a night full of games! Thank you for your understanding and continued support – Meeple und Macchiato wouldn’t be the same without you.
Question: Is there an explanation of the rules? Answer: That depends on how busy the café is. On quieter days, Patrik is happy to offer you a brief game consultation and give you an initial overview of selected games. For more complex games, we recommend taking a look at the rules beforehand – there are many great explanatory videos on YouTube. You'll also find a link to the game collection on our website. Feel free to browse through it – you might discover your next favorite game.
Question: Do you know all your games? Answer: Unfortunately not. We've received many great game donations – sometimes dozens at once. This has grown our collection considerably, but we're only really familiar with a small portion of them so far. Little by little, we're getting into the swing of things and learning more and more titles – our knowledge is growing bit by bit.
Question: Can I bring my own games? Answer: Sure! You're welcome to bring and play your own games. Please understand that you'll still be charged a game fee – because you can also play your own games at our comfortable tables.
Question: Can I bring my own food and drinks? Answer: We ask for your understanding that you are not allowed to bring your own food or drinks. As a café-bistro with a carefully selected menu, we look forward to pampering you with our delicacies.
Question: Do you have parking facilities? Answer: Unfortunately, we don't have our own parking spaces. If you're coming by car, you can park at the Düsseldorf Arcaden if necessary – the rates are fair, and you can still get out even after 10 p.m. Our recommendation: Use public transport! The Bilk S-Bahn station is a real transportation hub with many bus and train lines – from there, you can reach us in just a few minutes.
Question: Is your café wheelchair accessible? Answer: Unfortunately, not completely. The access to our courtyard and our restrooms are currently not suitable for wheelchair users. We would like to change this, but the restrooms in particular would require extensive structural work, which is currently financially unfeasible for us. However, we are planning improvements to our premises – step by step.
Question: Why are you only open until 10 p.m.? Answer: Our current opening hours, which are until 10 p.m., are required by the authorities. However, we are in contact with the city and hope to be able to welcome you longer in the future – at least inside at the gaming table.
Question: Do you also offer vegan food and drinks? Answer: Yes! Many of our dishes are vegan – for example, our homemade cakes, many of which are even gluten-free. We also offer a vegan option for our hot dishes every week. Of course, we also offer oat milk as a plant-based alternative for our coffee and tea specialties.
Question: Are dogs allowed? Answer: Yes, dogs are very welcome! Just make sure you don't disturb other guests. You'll find our basic dog rules on site – and of course, your four-legged friend will have free fresh water in their bowl.
Question: Can I sell my games at your café? Answer: We have discontinued our second-hand market. At the moment, we are no longer buying used games, and there is currently no option to offer your games for sale through us.
Question: Can I buy gift vouchers from you? Answer: You can purchase vouchers at our café during our opening hours, and you’re free to choose any amount. Payment can be made in cash or by card. Alternatively, you can also buy vouchers online. You’ll find the link on our homepage.
Question: Can I return event tickets if I’m unable to attend? Answer: Unfortunately, purchased tickets cannot be refunded or transferred to another date. If you’re unable to attend, you’re welcome to pass your ticket on to someone else. In the rare event that we have to cancel an event, you may choose between a replacement date or a refund.
